Obituary of John H Nelson
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We are saddened to announce the passing of John H. Nelson III, known by close family and friends as "Big John" on May 5, 2024, in Northfield, New Jersey at the age of 69. Born on August 10, 1954 at Fort Dix, John was the son of John H. Nelson Jr. and Ethel "Peg" Nelson (Sprague). John was the eldest of three siblings and had four children.
John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Charlene Nelson (Bianchi), children: Ryan Nelson (Tiffany Schweitzer Nelson), and Kevin Nelson (Victoria D'Amico), and his siblings: Jeffrey Nelson and Jane Kearns (Tom Kearns). He was the proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Allison, Hunter, Aiden, Collins and Archer and was constantly shadowed by his "most loyal dog" Sophie. John is predeceased by his parents John and Ethel, his daughter Jessica Young (Nelson) and son John Nelson IV "Jack".
John grew up in Beach Haven and graduated from Southern Regional High School in 1972 before moving to Northfield. He went on to operate the Pleasantville Check Cashing business and later found joy in being a Jitney Driver (#121) in Atlantic City. Beyond his professional life, John was involved in the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, where he served as a former president, was an avid participant each year in the Local Boys Fishing Tournament and was a member at the Moose Lodge in Atlantic City, all while making time to visit various businesses and restaurants in the area to catch up with friends.
Known for his love of various activities in the bay and ocean like fishing and crabbing, as well as hunting and spending time at his property in Maurice River Township, John will be remembered by many for his quick wit and love of a good joke.
While we mourn the loss of John, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit and humor will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a service celebrating his life on Wednesday May 15, 2024 at the Gormley Funeral Home LLC 2706 Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City from 11am-1pm.
